What does it mean for a company to be ready for artificial intelligence?
A company that is ready for AI has a clear process for a specific task, trusted data sources, accessible knowledge, documented decision rules and a defined boundary between what AI may do and what a person must approve. Its entire operation does not need to be perfectly digitalised. Readiness is assessed area by area according to value and risk.
Five signs of readiness
- The process has a clear starting point, outcome and owner, and its exceptions are documented.
- The current source of truth is known for important information.
- Company knowledge is not available only in the heads of individuals.
- It is clear what AI may propose or carry out, and what it must refer to a person.
- The benefit can be measured in terms of time, quality, speed or capacity.
You do not need to prepare everything at once
A company can start with one process if it has reliable context and a safe way to check the outcome. The aim is not to postpone AI until everything is perfect. It is to avoid starting in an area where AI would simply accelerate the existing chaos.
