When does an AI agent need human approval?
An AI agent needs human approval whenever a decision creates a contractual commitment, changes a price or deadline, has a significant financial impact, involves sensitive data or concerns a case outside clearly defined rules. The approval threshold is set according to the impact of an error, the certainty of the inputs and whether the action can be safely reversed.
Three levels of work
AI can simply retrieve information, prepare a proposal for a person or carry out an authorised action. Each successive level requires better inputs, tighter permissions and more precise control rules.
How to set the boundary
Consider the impact of an error, the reliability of the sources, the frequency of exceptions and whether the action can be reversed. Automatically sending an internal notification carries a different level of risk from sending a binding quotation to a customer.
